Children's literature has long captured the imaginations of young people and has proven to be an integral part of modern development.

Children's literature can aid in developing a sense of morality, logic, and lateral thinking. Early childhood books in particular are specifically written to simply and concisely educate children in basic skills. As a child progresses in age they move onto books that contain content more relevant to their age group, for example moving from Dr.Seuss to Roald Dahl to Harry Potter, a progression from early childhood literature to that of young adult.

Children's literature also stimulates the imagination and provides a fictional escape, as is true of adult fiction. This is essential in keeping a lifestyle balance and provides variety to relaxation and entertainment (other examples being television, internet, video games, etc) and ensures reading and linguistic skills are maintained. This feeds into communication skills that are essential for socialising as well as nurturing an ongoing education that allows an individual to think freely and form their own opinions.

Children's literature is important for recreation as well as being a vehicle of didactic purpose, thus making it a significant institution within literature as a whole with a long history of literary innovation and imagination.
